Team leaderboards are a simple yet powerful gamification tool for your next fitness or wellness challenge – by enhancing motivation, engagement, and a sense of community for your participants. A little friendly competition goes a long way in helping participants stay accountable while making movement more enjoyable.
However, not all team leaderboards are created equal. Depending on your company’s goals, different types of leaderboards can drive participation in unique ways. Whether you want to encourage collaboration, promote department-wide competition, or give participants full control over their teams, there’s a leaderboard format that fits your needs.
We support multiple modes for configuring team leaderboards, making it easy to find the right setup for your wellness challenge. Additionally, individual leaderboards are always available and can be combined with team leaderboards, allowing participants to track both personal progress and team performance simultaneously.
No Teams
Maintaining individual leaderboards is a great option when you want participants to compete individually rather than as part of a team. This format is great for companies looking to encourage self-motivation and personal goal setting while still fostering a sense of friendly competition. There is no limit to what you can do with individual leaderboards to make your challenge one to remember.
Participants’ Choice
Should you decide that you want to give participants their choice of teams, there are two team leaderboard configurations to consider.
The first gives participants the option to either join an existing team or create a new team of their own. This option is effective for driving engagement, as participants feel a sense of ownership over their teams. We can automatically adjust team results based on the average score per team member to allow a fair competition between teams of different sizes. However, challenge admins might still need to oversee team balance to prevent significant differences in size or competitiveness. To encourage fair play, you might consider setting some guidelines for team creation alongside challenge etiquette guidelines.
The second requires participants to select a team from a pre-defined list, created by challenge admins. Typically, the teams are based on departments, office locations, or other company structures to encourage cross-functional bonding. Setting teams based on company structures ensures that employees engage with people outside of their immediate colleagues, fostering stronger workplace relationships.
This approach is best suited for organizations looking to give participants autonomy while maintaining control over branding and team structures. Allowing participants to choose their own teams can boost engagement by giving them a sense of ownership and camaraderie. However, challenge admins must actively monitor team selection to ensure fair distribution and prevent imbalanced team sizes.
Automatically Assigned Teams
For companies that prefer a hands-off approach, participants can be randomly assigned to teams automatically. Again, there are two types of automatically assigned team leaderboards.
The first type of automatically assigned team leaderboard requires challenge admins to create a list of pre-defined teams. It’s important to note that if participants join the challenge before the teams have been created, challenge admins will have to manually assign them to teams.
This type of team leaderboard is ideal for organizations looking to promote collaboration across different groups while keeping the process structured and easy to manage. By removing the choice factor, challenge admins can make sure that teams are more diverse based on the available factors.
The second type of automatically assigned team leaderboards dynamically creates teams as participants join. This means that challenge admins are prompted to choose how they would like the teams to be named (by number, color, etc.) and set a maximum team size. Then, as participants join the challenge, they will randomly be assigned to a team – keeping things fresh and ensuring a fair distribution of participants without manual intervention.
Large organizations benefit the most from this format, as it eliminates the administrative burden while encouraging participants to create new connections with their colleagues.
Assigned by admin
There is of course a team leaderboard option that gives administrators full authority to manually assign participants to teams and adjust teams as needed throughout the competition.
It is best for companies that require structured team placement based on skill level, department, or other strategic goals. While it ensures fair competition, it also demands a high level of administrative oversight.
Complete Customization for Enterprise Customers
For organizations with unique gamification needs, this option allows full customization of team formation, names, leaderboard metrics, and competition structures.
Large enterprises with complex corporate wellness strategies benefit most from this approach. It aligns leaderboards with company-specific goals and engagement strategies. A custom approach is best achieved implementing our Setup Service Plan – where we translate your needs for setup and the ongoing management of your challenge to optimize participation and effectiveness.
