Problem Statement

Lenovo’s “Walk for Water” challenge followed WeHero and WellAware’s map of 10 clean water projects in Machakos County, Kenya. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and support in response to the need for clean water in Kenya, where 60% of water wells in specific regions are non-functional. Every checkpoint reached translated to a corporate donation of $10. A cumulative donation of nearly $100,000 was made towards supporting the maintenance of existing wells and creation of new ones.

Solution

Lenovo was looking for a comprehensive and user-friendly platform to support and engage their participants to reach all 10 checkpoints of the “Walk for Water” map.

Key Success Factors

Ease of Use: Participants found it convenient to join the challenge using QR code, appreciating the absence of barriers that made participation more accessible and effortless.

  • Integrations: Through our app, “Walk for Water” participants could easily connect their preferred fitness apps and devices to track their progress. All activities were automatically synced, and leaderboards were updated in real-time to reflect progress for the duration of the challenge.
  • Customization: We collaborated with the WizeHive team to develop brand assets to customize the look and feel of the CorporateFitness.app platform. Aligning the platform’s visual elements with Lenovo’s brand helped to create a cohesive and branded user experience for participants.
  • Virtual Map & Badges: We created a custom map not only to visually represent the full distance as well as the distance between checkpoints, but to also provide an integrated experience for participants. At each virtual checkpoint, participants could find information about water scarcity and the water project in the area. Additionally, information about the impact of the project on the community helped to give participants context of their own impact on the big picture goal of the event.

Results

A total of 700 participants walked over 30,000 miles across the virtual trail between clean water projects in Machakos County in Kenya. Their effort resulted in a donation of nearly $100,000 for the “Walk for Water” campaign.

Movement for a Cause: Recognizing the significance of each mile, participants were encouraged to invest in their physical wellbeing while being united by a meaningful cause.

Lasting effects: The impact of this initiative extended well beyond the miles walked. It ignited discussions in households and workplaces alike, fostering compassion and understanding for those who struggle daily to access clean water.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

As with any project with many different device integrations there are always a few users who have trouble connecting their device. Open communication channels and quick response times helped to get these resolved quickly. The CorporateFitness.app platform allows participants to backload their data, so even when a user has an issue connecting at the start, they were still able to participate without missing a mile of their hard work.

Conclusion

Together with CorporateFitness.app and WizeHive, Lenovo was able to successfully run the “Walk for Water” event to support access to clean water in Kenya. A total of 700 participants walked over 30,000 miles to raise nearly $100,000 towards resources and water wells between World Water Day and Earth Day.
